I have a red and black sports resistance band that I’ve been using to work on my strength and flexibility as a dancer. The band is a stretchy elastic loop, strong enough to pull my body weight. I got curious how the resistance and rebound of the band influences the physicality of dancing bodies.
Warmup Routine is a workout for three dancers and three resistance bands. It reflects our reality of training to become a dancer: showing qualities of effort and resistance, of playfulness and joy, of (literally) being stuck in a loop, of taking off to fly, of rebound and of being pulled back, of struggle, exhaustion, pleasure, and madness. A dry training session turns into a playful and passionate exploration of what it means to work with our bodies as dancers. The band materialises the resistance as well as the buoyancy that dancers are experiencing daily, in an infinite elastic loop of bouncing between the struggle with joy and the joy of struggle.
